Rowing at Shirehampton

Shirehampton Sailing Club have the use of two rowing boats, a Cornish Pilot Gig on loan from Bristol Gig Club and a smaller four oar rowing boat. We have access to relatively sheltered tidal water which is safe for beginners but also interesting for more experienced rowers.

Who can join?

No prior experience is necessary, so anyone new or experienced to rowing is welcome. We would recommend that participants are aged 14 or older.

When do we row?

It depends on the tide. We must have deep enough water to launch safely and can normally row up to 2 hours either side of the high tide. We can only row in day light for safety reasons, so the summer evenings offer more opportunities, but in the winter we are limited mostly to weekend rows. For the latest rowing dates, check the calendar.

What do I need to wear/bring?

You should dress appropriately for the weather conditions, and advise suitable sports based clothing. It’s better to wear a few thin layers so you can add/remove layers to keep you at the right temperature throughout the session. For footwear you will need something to provide support, as when rowing a lot of power comes from your legs, so it’s important they have a firm platform to push on. Trainers or walking boots are ideal. We recommend footwear you don’t mind getting wet. Do also bring something to drink.

How do I get involved?

Email info@shiresc.co.uk with ‘Gig Rowing’ in the subject and include your name, phone number and whether you have rowed before.
